Scarlet Tanager, Gray Catbird and Nesting Loons

Welcome to the 7th season of weekly bird reports for the Brainerd Lakes Area. The weekly birding report for the Brainerd Lakes area is provided in partnership with Visit Brainerd and local guide and naturalist Judd Brink.

Thanks to everyone who follows the weekly birding reports for the Brainerd lakes area and my birding adventures.  May is the peak month for the spring migration in the area!

Birds observed this past week in the Brainerd Lakes area include: Scarlet Tanager, Orange Crown Warbler, Orchard Oriole, Northern Parula, Oven Bird, Hermit Thrush, Great-crested Flycatcher, Eastern Kingbird, Least Flycatcher, American Redstart, Harris Sparrow, Black Poll Warbler, Magnolia Warbler, Tennessee Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, Golden-winged Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Yellow-throated Vireo, Rose-breasted Grosebeak, Oriole, White-crowned Sparrow, Palm Warbler, Black and White Warbler, Woodduck, Blue-winged  Teal, Merlin, Osprey, Bald Eagle, Fox Sparrow, White-throated sparrow, Purple Finch, Goldfinch, Blue Bird, Purple Martin, Raven, Tree Swallow, Eastern Towhee, Broad-wing Hawk, Red-winged Blackbird, Red-tailed Hawk, Great-blue Heron, Brown Thrasher, Chipping Sparrow, Clay-colored Sparrow, Common Loon, Horned Grebe,Northern Flicker, Double Crested Cormorant, Pied-billed Grebe, Pileated Woodpecker and Turkey Vulture. Loon update: the loons are now nesting and have one egg laid. Please visit the link above to see the loons on the nest and possibly get a look at the one egg or maybe a second egg.

Bear warning: bears are being reported visiting bird feeders in the area. Please keep your bird seed indoors if kept outdoors and remove feeders each evening if possible.
